Reflection # 1
Delancey is a program for people that need help in their lives that hit rock bottom and don’t know where to start to get back on their feet. People that Delancey help are inmates, homeless, and people that want to make a difference in their lives. What Delancey does is it has a lot of on hand experiences for the field that they want to be able to go into. It makes me happy that there are programs that would go into the prisons when they get letters from inmates asking for help because they want to be able to get jobs when they get out. There are a lot of programs that help but they don’t really care about the people they help and they are only for a limited time. They don’t help them to get on their feet after they are done with the programs they just say thank you for being with us and have a nice life and good luck. However, Delancey cares even when the people end their education with them and help them after they get their certificates and help them get places to live or back with their families. What this video help me when it comes to developing my academic skills is it helped me become better at critical thinking. I feel like it helped my academic skills more because I can think more deeply on what the video and the program can do to help people in our society. I can do my work for my other classes better than I have been because my thinking skills have improved. It really makes me wonder that this could have been one of my family members that could have been in jail and have a hard time being the person they were before they went to prison and how society now views them like they do to the people that comes from jail into Delancey. Watch the video, A Society of Consumers?. Note: This video link will open a video player in a new window. Write a minimum 250 word reflection (2 paragraphs) on culture and consumerism (considering the following questions):
I believe we are consumers because we keep buying things that we need to survive or that helps us along the way. The consequences of consuming too much is that we get too much without using what we had in the first place or we get things because we want it and don't really need it. The next thing we know is that we have become hoarders because we can't find the way to say no, okay we have enough. We keep buying and buying and is running out of places to put things and it gets harder to get rid of or to thrown/ give away. We learn to consume buy advertisement, marketeers, and media. They show everyone what the new thing is and how much they can help change the way we live. Either by buying cars, food, clothes, and accessories (like electronics, makeup, sunglasses, etc). The way to restrain ourselves is by saying "I already have this do I need another one", or if we have the money for it but need something else we can say well "I don't need this right now, I need to buy shampoo or things for school. I can always come back and get this next time". Reflection # 3
This discussion that we did was based off a video showing us how we are consumers and what the consequences of our actions are. I realize after watching this video is we are always buying things that we need or the things that we want every day. It could be the clothes that we wear or the music that we buy just so we can have them just like everyone else. We as people look at the things that are shown on the TV or what are friends have and all we think is I got to have that. We keep buying and buying and storing them in our homes until we have too much of it and we don’t know what to do with them. It’s funny as humans we don’t always think about the consequences that comes with the purchasing of the products that are on display. One of the things is we lose money because rather than saving it for something that we really need like food, tooth paste, hairbrushes, hair ties, we are spending it on the next best thing. We are always going to be on the losing side of the deal because the companies that make the products that we buy get half or most of the profit and the money that they make on it. The other consequences that we face as humans as I already said before when buying and not having room we become hoarders. That’s right hoarders because over time when we keep the things, that we don’t need but gotten attach to just stays in one spot and the next thing we know is that we have way too much. One of the ways we can restrain ourselves when it comes to buying stuff that we already have or what we want is saying do I need this right now? I can wait for this and buy what I really need right now is house supplies, food, or female/ male accessories. Another one to do is make a list of the items that are needed and when you go to the stores and we see something that we adore. We can look back at the list and see how much money we have budget ourselves at and think maybe next time. This video helped me to realize to appreciate the things that I have because there are people out there who don’t have what I have. I can now say that even though I have stop buying a lot of books that I love to buy I can now say that I do buy the things that need. I’m also proud to say that I do save money now and spend it on food that my family and I need because I do help out when we do run out. At least that is something I can be proud to be a consumer by. |
Artifact 2
This is another discussion that I did for my SOC
1. Social Construction of Gender is when someone is label as male or female when this happens they get a certain obligations put on them that they will later have to do in life. In our society the image they have for men and women to follow in their behaviors, clothes, jobs, and their education. When babies are born their genders are the first thing that is looked at and when it's known there are a few influences that come like who they can be friends with, what they wear, what games to play and especially what kind of job they can get and how much money they can bring in. 2. Feminism is the belief in social, economic, and political equality for women. The first wave happened in 1848 when the first move for women rights happen and it faced a lot of ridicule and scorn because of what the women believe they should have. The second wave happened in 1960 which became a full force in 1970 when books came out by Friedan who wrote about that it wasn't a problem with whom the women were but the position they are forced to uphold and what they were cut off from. The third wave happened in 1990 which was about the new views of open sexuality and the personal empowerment to the people that want it. Feminism address the sexism by destroying the image of how they should dress like, it also destroys the institutional of where the women are allow to work at and work as and lets them choose. Feminism helped break through the glass ceiling because women were once forced to stay at one level of work until they finally had enough and pushed themselves to a higher level. 3. The men were the ones to work outside the house in the office, politics, police, and fireman because they were seen as male jobs only for their masculine appearance. Women were to work at home as wives, mothers, and home managers. Men made more money than women by 81.2 percent. The gender wage gap by age is basically what the men and women should be payed based on the level they work on. Women are said to be working the lower pay areas and the men the regular paying areas. The gap cannot be closed because if the factors that were placed so the men get more pay were eliminated the gap by 2 percent. 4. The second shift is the double burden- work outside the home followed by child care and housework- that many women face and few men share equality. It can be possible for the men to share equality with the women if they chose to because then it would make it less stressful for everyone. The men can make schedules and play dates if they work together with their wives so they can understand it more when they finally do it on their own when their wives can't. Reflection # 2
This week we were talking about Gender and how it can determine what you allow to do and behave in the eyes of our society. If you were born a male or female at birth it determines how you are to dress, talk to, where you can work and how much you can make. In the early years for women, women couldn’t work they were supposed to stay home and clean the house, make dinner, and watch the kids. But, then later on in the 1960s to 1990s they started the women rights movement to get equal rights as men. However, they faced a lot of ridicule and scorn for what they were doing but later that open a lot more doors for women. They started writing books saying that it’s nothing to do with whom they are but what they are in the society eyes. They wanted more like being able to earn money, work in offices, or out in the field like their counterparts (men) they want to show them that they can be what they want to be. Later on women were able to get better jobs, educations, and raise money. But, that still didn’t mean they were equal because the men still earned more money than they did. Men still didn’t work in the homes and they don’t help out the women when they have to work a second shift after they get off of work. The second shift is where the women get off of work and still have to go home make dinner, watch the kids, and clean the house. On top of that they still make schedules and play dates for their kids while coming home from work. Women even though they work they are faced with violence. They are attacked by people they know or even at the campuses they are attending for their educations. Even though they are attacked the events are never reported because the women feel that in some way they deserve it or they are scared of the person that attacked them. Final Reflection
As my final reflection for this class I can happily say that I have accomplish all my goals that I have set for myself. By doing all the homework and the discussions that I have finished really help me become a better student and it is easier to think deeper when it comes to certain areas that require it. I learn a lot of how our society works and what kind of fundamental that we actually live in. This helped me the best way academically by showing me that I need to work to my full potential as a student and to take my education seriously because it’s the only thing that can help me in securing my future. I believe that I answer the skills that I have developed is my critical thinking however the most thing I have to work on is splitting my time between classes more than I have because for this class I’m always running to finish at the last minute. |
